About Us
Hi there! I’m Teresa Smolinski. My husband and I always swore we would teach our girls to be financially responsible and promised we’d share our love for the business world with them. We didn’t expect it to happen so soon! Starting a business with your child can be incredibly rewarding and the life-lessons immeasurable. Although I don’t profess to know it all, I can promise you I’m sharing what I have learned along the way. One of the best lessons that I’ve learned? I love sharing the excitement of creating and nurturing a business. Enjoy the journey!
I’ve got a degree in Business - I went to UConn and would love to go back and do it again knowing what I know now! Nothing compares to lessons learned along the way. I’ve been freelancing full-time since 1994, when I had my youngest daughter. I did not want to continue working my way up the corporate ladder at the bank. I wanted more freedom. I wanted more control. I searched for a long time before started my career creating technical art for math textbooks. Huh? Yes, it’s like getting paid to do homework. You can see our studio work here: Smolinski Studios.

In 2005, our family launched Pre-wrap.com. My daughter desperately wanted pre-wrap and I couldn’t find it locally. No one marketed it as a headband, although that’s what I knew the girls used it for. Why not have some fun and learn about business at the same time? Since then, so many people have asked us how we did it that I decided to start this blog.
I also recently took over Internet Based Kids. Check it out – and get a free Getting Started Guide.
I’m Christina Lemmey and I’ve partnered with Teresa as the Content Manager here at Kids In Biz and at Internet Based Kids. I’ve been working online for 4 1/2 years as a Virtual Assistant and I also have a 10-year-old daughter who is forever asking me how SHE can make money!
As a young teen I went the typical route of making money: babysitting. At the time, however, I had 3-4 regular families I babysat for so I was making a decent amount of money each month from these regular gigs. My big accomplishment at the time was charging a $5 / hour holiday rate on New Year’s Eve! LOL
When I was old enough to go out into the working world I paid my dues at an Italian bakery, McDonald’s, and various stores similar to Walmart. My fondest memories were working at an upscale restaurant because the waiters would split their tips with me. Talk about GOOD money!
I graduated from Syracuse University and worked for magazine publishers and a pharmaceutical ad agency. I was happy to be working but I wasn’t the least bit interested in the production end of advertising. It’s amazing that now I can work from home strictly on the computer instead of trudging to an office every day!
I’m extremely excited about this venture because kids are incredibly creative, much more so than when I was younger! I’m amazed at their ideas and I want to showcase that to you kids who are looking for business ideas.
Good luck with your business ventures!
