Hey, my name is Emily and I have just started my own dog walking buissnes these tips weren't all that helpful, everyone else said the same thing. This is what I bring to my jobs:
1. Extra leash (different depending on the dogs size)
2. Small treats (one a day never hurt them)
3. My Book with all my jobs in it
4. My cell phone with emergency numbers on speed dial
5. The owners information
6. Purse with: $5 in cash, my student ID, library card, key chain with my house key and the owners key, cell phone

well thanks for all the advice on starting my business i am going to start one with my sister and a friend. Although i did have a few questions though-
* how much should u charge for one hour of walking one dog?
*If their is 2 of us walking dogs how many can we handle?
*How should you get the word out about your business without having way too much to handle?

Hey! :)
I'm in my teens and want to start a dog walking business.
My parents tell me I'm responsible and I make all A's.
I absolutely love dogs and have some experience with walking.
I'm not an expert but read up on dogs whenever I can.
I personally don't own a dog myself, so this job would be an opportunity for me to show my parents that I'm ready for a dog.
I can also offer services like feeding, playing with the dogs, and some other household chores (getting the mail, watering plants, etc.).
Can you give me some tips on dog walking, some info on the going rate for a non-pro walker, and who would hire a teen that isn't a pro?'
Thanks in advance! :)

I was just wondering if you have anything in the contract if the dog gets hurt, or hurt someone or something else. OR if the dog gets lost.

Excellent suggestion. Parents should ALWAYS be involved when a child is providing a service for other adults, whether it be babysitting, pet sitting, plant watering...even selling fundraising items door to door.

I always go with my daughters to their new clients and supervise until I have a high comfort level. Parents need to check out the animals, as well. A dog that is well-behaved in the owner's eyes may not behave well for someone else.

Since this info is for kids, I really wish you would add something about safety. There are lots of people out there who would use this as an opportunity to harm a child.

Kids should always have parents meet the clients prior to doing business. Get the client's personal info and keep it on file, including some sort of photo id copy. Then, set up a schedule. They should check in by phone when they arrive to walk the dog, and again when they have left. Any client who does not agree to this should be avoided. Parents may even want to check out the online sex-offender websites just to be extra safe. It's unfortunate, but it is a reality. Better safe than sorry.
